The defendant tore a gas meter from the wall of an empty house to steal money inside it. Gas escaped and seeped into the neighbouring house, partially asphyxiating his future mother-in-law. He was charged under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861 with 'maliciously' administering a noxious substance.
