Hadley operated a mill in Gloucester. The crankshaft of the mill broke, stopping operations. Hadley hired Baxendale (a carrier) to transport the broken shaft to the manufacturer as a pattern for a new one. Due to Baxendale's delay, delivery took several days longer than expected, causing Hadley to lose profits from the extended shutdown.
